The beaming smile of Pape Mbaye is as well loved as his wide musical talents. It's an infectious smile that seems to go hand-in-hand with the West African rhythms that lie at the root of his music. Pape Mbaye, and his eight-piece band Chosani Afrique, bring some of the magic of West Africa to their audience - a night of Latin, Reggae and Jazz, inspired and led by this uncontainable master percussionist.
Biographies: Pape Mbaye is the dextrous percussionist, playing djembe, and sabar. A Griot from Yoff, Pape is also a dancer, choreographer and teacher. He was the head drummer in his village, worked with Chiekh Lo and Souleyman Faye, played alongside BB King, Miles Davis and Ringo Starr as well as being a percussionist and dancer for L'Ensemble Traditionelle Sorano and the Orchestre Nationale du Senegal. Living and working in Australia since 1999 Pape has played in African Diaspora, Global Roots and Marsala, highlighting his versatility as a musician. Dan Wallace on keyboards and tres has played and recorded with numerous latin and afro cuban bands in Sydney including Saraquey, Sandunga, Candela. As well as being a teacher and a casual lecturer at the University of Sydney, he has composed music for both television and film, Life Matters, screened on SBS, The Pill Box, Alligators Hatching screened on ABC. Currently he is also performing with Mano a Mano, Badema, and Marsala. Sam Golding on trumpet and flute is currently a full time performer, and multi instrumentalist. As well as adding those brassy interjections in Chosani Afrique, he also performs with Mano a Mano and Marsala. He is a graduate of Sydney University majoring in Jazz studies and has performed with such people as Jackie Orzascky and M Camembert and was a member of the Sydney Youth orchestra. Jarred Kneale plays the Western Drum Kit. He is a recent graduate of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music with a Bachelor of Music majoring in Jazz performance. He has been a freelance drummer in Sydney for a number of years playing with various bands. Nathan Shepherd plays saxophone and keyboards and brings a wealth of experience to the band. After graduating WA conservatorium of Music with The Harold Schenburg award for best graduating musician, he played and toured WA in various jazz and funk bands. He then relocated to the UK where he played and toured with a number of different bands before joining Mofro. This band toured both the UK and USA extensively supporting such people as The Wailers, Garage a Trois and Taj Mahal. Since returning to Australia Nathan has worked as a freelance jazz musician and now is part of the regular line up of Chosani Afrique Blair Greenberg is well known as a musician/composer. He has composed extensively for theatre, film and dance, toured with Robyn Archer, Jeannie Lewis, Margret Roadnight, The Paranormal Music Society, Epizo Bangoura, The Hottentots, and many others. He co-produced Zulya's album, 'elusive', which was nominated for an Aria award, and has studied the music of many different cultures: West African drumming in Guinea, Indian classical music in India, Indonesian gamelan, and Cuban music. Blair has released his own CD called 'The Moment', featuring original songs and a who's who of Australian musicians. Recent projects have included a national tour with Australian Theatre of the Deaf's production, 'Dislabelled' and recording and producing an album of traditional West African music in Guinea with Mohamed Bangoura. He is a regular performer at music festivals around the country. Peter Firth plays the very funky bass. Well known as a latin and reggae specialist Peter is a professional musician and brings a wealth international experience to the band. He spent ten years living and working in Japan as a session musician and toured Asia extensively with various groups based there. Since returning in 1998 he has worked with such bands as Mano a Mano Marsala and the Ressurectors Martin Hailey the lead guitarist, comes from a jazz and classical music background and has worked professionally for many years in various genres. He has produced and album for Jimmy Little and played and toured with of course Jimmy Little, but also Motel, Nina Hagen, Brooke Mclymont and Karma County.
