Line up(s) available: 3 piece (trio) “Some people are saying it is country music, I would call it a soulful sort of rock.” Respected by his peers, and described as “a mix between Mark Knopfler, Eddie Van Halen, Brad Paisley with the fire and passion the likes of Hendrix” Lee ‘Sonnyboy’ Morgan has released his second independently recorded album, appropriately named ‘Sonnyboy’, a nickname he has carried since childhood. Over the years Lee Morgan has toured and played with many of the greats of Australian folk, roots and country-rock:
In 1991, ‘Sonnyboy’ won his heat of the Australian Rebel Yell Guitar Challenge. In 1993 Lee participated in the Songlines Pilot Course. In January 1999 Lee was awarded Male Artist of the Year at the Australian Roots Music Awards for ‘Midnight Train’ a song from his debut disc Laura Lee And The Stranger. Lee Morgan began playing guitar at the age of 11. On hearing Lee play one day, his grandfather on his father’s side was so impressed with his playing that he gave Lee a gift of $100 towards formal guitar lessons from legendary guitar player Fred Reilly and his understudy Les Herd. One of three children, Lee grew up at Framlingham Aboriginal mission beside the Hopkins River in South-Western Victoria. With a father of Welsh Celtic descent and an Aboriginal mother Lee is the child of, and his music the expression of Australia’s cultural journey, continuing the storytelling inspired by his maternal grandfather Gundjitjmarra elder the great Banjo Clarke (Wisdom Man). Lee ‘Sonnyboy’ Morgan is a singer/songwriter/guitarist with much to say in his music. Years in the making, on his latest album Sonnyboy Lee Morgan captures a portion of who he is and what he believes in. "I've known Lee for 15 years, in that time I've watched him grow and develop as a musician. Talented, generous and respectful, he honours the legacy of his Aboriginal heritage. He is an exceptionally gifted guitar player, live or in the studio."
