Martin Cox

Profile Songlist Bookings
Based in: Melbourne VIC
Line up(s) available: solo, 2 piece (duo)

From tours of the Victorian countryside as an oboist with the Victoria State Opera to performing a Live Karaoke show in a nightclub in Spain, via piano bars, restaurants, hotels and festivals, Martin Cox, has performed solo, in duos, cover and original bands since the 1980’s. He is an amazingly versatile performer, having performed in pop, rock, jazz, blues, reggae, Latin, African and Irish folk bands, classical orchestras and even a semi-improvised minimalist band – Philip Glass meets Miles Davis! He has done children’s and seniors’ shows for years and can also play organ or keyboard at your church or civil wedding (see below).

He can draw on his enormous repertoire of songs (see song list) and huge experience to provide nearly any style of music from smooth dinner-set jazz to up-tempo dance songs featuring songs from the 1920’s to the present day. He is expert at reading a crowd and can provide a variety of music in any situation to keep everyone happy.

Ballroom dance afficianados will especially love his ability to play popular Latin dance styles (sung in fluent Spanish) such as salsa, cha cha, merengue, samba, tango, rhumba as well as jive, waltz and hip-hop.

Martin plays piano or provides his own state-of-the-art keyboard which, as well as sounding like a piano, he uses to create quality backings in real time. This gives him amazing versatility and spontaneity as songs can be lengthened for example if the dance floor is buzzing.

If someone feels a song coming on and wants to join in Martin has years of experience doing sing-a-longs and what he terms “Live Karaoke” which can be either a full show or just a part of his normal show. He provides various microphones so singers can get up in a group – often an easier and more fun way of getting over the nerves. With the keyboard he can also change key and tempo at the touch of a button. The lyrics are in a book on a music stand. This can be loads of fun at a wedding for example and Martin is expert at making sure it’s done in a tasteful way, people are enjoying it and it doesn’t go on too long.

Martin has a great stage presence also and can motivate the chronically shy to let loose on the dance floor or to sing a song with him, he can MC a wedding with confidence but can also stay quietly unobtrusive in the background for restaurants, corporate or cocktail bar style settings.

He can also play the organ for weddings or can even take his keyboard to the beach or forest (if there’s a power supply within 50 metres) and play a realistic sounding church organ, harp or any other instrument you could desire for civil weddings or any other celebration you may have in mind.

He has written film scores, music for dance, theatre and TV, created and composed the songs for a kids’ pop band and teaches music in various schools around Melbourne. Suffice to say he lives and breathes music. As an experienced performer running and MC-ing his own shows for years he is not just a pretty face behind a dazzling keyboard! He’s an entertainer in every sense of the world.
