The Rhythm Hunters are a world music ensemble based on the Central Coast of NSW.

Led by Rendra Freestone, The Rhythm Hunters play an inspired brand of physical drumming blended with tuned wood blocks & bronze percussion.

Asian flute music is woven delicately into the thundering sound fabric of drums to create a music of heaven and earth.

Influences come from Japanese taiko, Indonesian music and the multicultural soundscapes of modern day Australia.

The Rhythm Hunters perform at corporate functions, community events, cultural ceremonies, gallery openings and music festivals.

Deep resounding rhythms are pounded out on large, Australian-made wine barrel Taiko. Music is punctuated with tight physical choreography including complex stick-throwing routines; fast interlocking patterns on bronze Talempong and a melodic family of ornate pacific wood blocks.

Melodies are played on wind instruments including the vibrant horn-like flute called the Saluang and some of its close relatives, the Sampelong and Bansi, also from Sumatra.

While The Rhythm Hunters are exclusively an Australian group, the stronger musical influences come from Japan, Indonesia and the experience of its members.

The Rhythm Hunters are also happy to help design and create a specific show to suit your event.

Drumming & Rhythm Classes, Workshops & Teambuilding

Rendra runs a weekly drumming class at The Rhythm Hut on the Central Coast of NSW. The class incorporates rhythmic exercises, traditional rhythms and making up our own rhythms. Its casual, informative and a lot of fun!

Terms often culminate in class concerts held at community events on the central coast or in our homebase, The Rhythm Hut.

Rhythm Hunting is an open-ended exploration of Rhythm. Workshops introduce groups to the wonderful world of rhythm. Sessions are ideal for social clubs, corporate team building sessions and for groups in general who would like to add some new life into the mix.

Workshops may be highly structured as for music students or totally experiential and orientated toward enjoyment. Make an enquiry if you have something in mind.
