Australian romantic piano sensation Fiona Joy Hawkins takes the award winning “Angel Above My Piano” to the upper reaches of the NAR world radio chart.
Recorded with some of the finest string players in her native Australia, Fiona Joy Hawkins’ Angel Above My Piano is a sweeping set of romantic piano compositions that is taking the instrumental world by (winter) storm.
Hawkins’ collection recently won the NAR (the international New Age Reporter) Lifestyle Music Award for Best Piano Album, a category that also included legendary solo pianist George Winston. Angel Above My Piano, which Hawkins recorded with some of her country’s most renowned string players, reached #3 on the NAR World Radio Charts, an impressive follow-up to the #1 position reached by her debut album Portrait Of A Waterfall. That first album was a finalist for Best Piano Album at the 2005 NAR Lifestyle Music Awards. Hawkins’ music is a staple on Sky FM internet radio’s solo piano channel.
For Hawkins, a longtime resident of the beautiful town of Little Hartley in the Blue Mountains of New South Wales, the accolades don’t stop there—and aren’t limited simply to her powerfully melodic musical expressions on the piano. Her stunning ‘Penguin Whisperer” nature video inspired by her life changing, soul stirring expedition cruise on the Orion to Antarctica in early 2006—has been a major YouTube sensation since its posting. The experience inspired the track ‘Dance of the Penguins’ which was a finalist at the MusicOZ Awards for Best Classical Composition.
The new video for another of Angel’s captivating tracks, “Flight Of The Albatross,” can also be viewed on YouTube and is a strong contender this year for a MusicOz Video Award.
“Dance Of The Penguins,” “Flight Of The Albatross” and Angel Above My Piano’s moody and contemplative opening track “Crystal Desert” combine to form a sweeping musical travelogue of Hawkins’ incredible journey to the globe’s coldest continent—which can be minus 30 degrees even in 24-hour sunshine in summer!
Hawkins also engages in some heartfelt soul searching via the grand orchestration and soaring piano of Opus For Love, a three part exploration of “Love For Winter,” “Love Forever” and “Love In Spring” that was written in response to the passing of her beloved grandmother, who was a primary force in Hawkins’ upbringing in Tamworth, New South Wales (the Australian country music capital—but she hates country!)
The title track brings to life a friend’s lovely charcoal drawing of an angel that came to him in a dream: “The Angel’ marks time and signifies the strength we search for in times of need. She looks like someone you know but no-one you have ever met.” Other key tracks are “Watching The Wind,” a reflection of the beauty of her garden and its Japanese maples; and “Thinking Of You (Australian Lullaby),” which she composed with her father. Hawkins also includes her interpretation of the Bach piece “Preamble: Partitia No. 5” in deference to her years of classical piano training.
Even as her career is soaring with Angel Above My Piano, Hawkins—who is also an accomplished visual artist who incorporates manuscripts of her music onto canvas to create bold mixed media abstracts--has several exciting projects in the works for 2008. Early in the year, she will be releasing Ice Piano, Slightly Chilled, a rhythmic, chill dance-oriented recording.
She is also getting ready to record an album titled Blue Dream with legendary 5 Grammy winning guitarist and producer Will Ackerman, who founded the iconic new age label Windham Hill in the late 70s. They will be working at his Imaginary Road Studios.
