Based in: Melbourne VIC
Line up(s) available: solo, 2 piece (duo), 3 piece (trio), 5 piece, 6 piece or more

Steve Romig is a Melbourne singer-songwriter. After many years supporting other well-known musos, it is now Steve’s time to shine. James Roche from Bachelor Girl said "Steve Romig is in the top one percent of vocalists in this country. Few musicians have the soul and blues of this incredibly talented singer."

Steve’s style ranges from funky and bluesy rock to moving and evocative acoustic ballads. Great rhythm and melody with something original added to the time-tested techniques. He plays solo, duo or with his band. He has had much to be authentically blue about over the years and has recently gathered several prestigious song-writing awards in that genre. Steve’s album “The Friday Sessions” has now gathered 4 international awards for the songs pre-release. It will be launched later in 2007.

Steve’s daughter, Jessica Paige, is now gathering accolades for her own songwriting and the two have recently toured the East Coast of Australia together and performed at Folk Clubs in Bendigo and Canberra. Guy Gibson, organizer of the Merry Muse Club in Canberra wrote:

“Steve Romig and Jessica Paige put on a show full of great original songs and witty stage banter and left the audience still wanting more. Solo they are standout performers, and together their act has a captivating charm that only father and daughter can have.”

Steve has recently had a song selected for a compilation to support Mr Holland’s Opus in the US, played at The Mount Beauty Music Muster to great response (so much so that the organizers doubled his band’s scheduled appearances), was interviewed & performed live on Mikes Brady’s 3AW radio show and his song charted No.1 on ILR Aussie Underground Music Show (syndicated) for 34 weeks straight.

Australia’s premier vocalist, John Farnham, covered two of Steve’s songs, “Sometimes” on Aria award-winning “The Last Time” album and in 1999 “Take You Back” on Anthology 3.

In 2002 Steve spent 6 months in Japan playing in Jazz trio and between 1990-2000 he supported top notch Aussie acts like Renee Geyer, Darryl Braithwaite, Tommy Emmanuel and Bachelor Girl.

Reviews:

"I would have to say, without hesitation, that Way Down Homeless Blues is the best Blues/Gospel song I've heard in the last decade, if not the last 2 decades... and totally worthy of its recent international song contest victories. Someone, please give this guy a record deal so the world can hear this prodigious talent."
Jim Keays, of the legendary Masters Apprentices

"I know many great players and writers here in the states who don't capture the soul of the R&B/Blues genre the way your song did."
Mark Furness, Director, Billboard Song Contest (about Way down homeless blues, Winner Blues RnB 2007)

MBAS Bluesletter The Friday Sessions, Rooster:

"Well, what a pearler of an album. It has all the essential ingredients, wonderfully written and composed songs, great musicianship, spot on production and the man can sing! From the opening track you are hooked.

Reminiscent of Ry Cooder’s work on the Crossroads soundtrack, Romig heads deep into the south, merging blues and gospel with “Way down homeless blues.” It introduces you to his rich, earthy voice, meaningful, emotion inspiring songs and his talented support crew. The crew includes ..stalwarts, Jim Keays on harmonica and Wilbur Wilde on sax. Romig himself is no slacker, taking on vocals, guitars, bass, contrabass, percussion and pens 11 of the 14 tracks...

…It is certainly a musical journey, there are some killer blues tracks but the whole spectrum of roots music is covered. Romig uses the blues as a solid trellis with everything from gospel through to soul, reggae to jazz, folk to r’n’b, all entwining in and around the trellis, just as it should. A variety of people and instruments come on board but are well captained by Romig’s voice and lyrics, every song produces something new and different and you are soon waiting in anticipation for the next track to see what unfolds."

April 2007 Geelong Review The Friday Sessions, Red Herring:

"This album is.. about Steve Romig being a talented songwriter and musician. The standout track for me is the opening track “Way down homeless blues”. It really is a knockout and captures the spirit of black American blues and gospel. It’s set up by moody, brooding and lowdown vocals and guitars and when the backing vocals land, they land like a giant flying saucer, uplifting and paramount. This track is best listened to loud.

“Turn up your Radio” features Jim Keays on harmonica and is a “Honky Tonk Women” meets the blues version of the classic “Masters Apprentices” tune. It works really well. “Lonely” is a beautifully written and performed tune…“The Mistress” has the tone of an Irish folk song and shows Steve’s eclectic taste and writing abilities…

“Everybody’s got their way” is a catchy, earthy and very memorable tune. “Body on my mind” works really well. “She’s alright” gets rockin’ again and “Leavin’ here today” gets lowdown and soulful with great uplifting vocals again. I’m dancing (on the inside) with “Backdoor man”. .. “My soul’s beloved” is a moving blues lament and the CD ends with the sweet and wistful track “Sleep”.

Steve Romig wrote 11 of the 14 tunes on “the Friday Sessions” and this CD proves he is a talented songwriter, lyricist and performer."

Reviews of Touch

Music Australia Guide 2005 Bill Pinnell Music Writer, Radio Host:

"After a long apprenticeship as a backing musician and opening act for Renee Geyer, Tommy Emmanuel and Daryl Braithwaite, singer/ songwriter/guitarist Steve Romig finally takes centre stage with his excellent debut release. A singer/musician of Romig’s caliber could have taken the easy route on his first journey into sololand, instead he has shown flair and imagination in his choice of arrangements on fourteen original songs.

The gospel / blues inspired Daddy Come Down features a sparse dobro. Acoustic slide accompanies his voice on Sometimes. Mike Rudd’s bluesy harmonica bobs up on Night And Day and there is a Chinese violin on Take You Back. Ain’t Gonna Be Your Dog is a nod to Big Joe Turner, while I Wanna Touch You and Old Friend are vehicles for Romig’s strong, melodic voice.

One of this year’s standout debuts heralds the arrival of a talented all-rounder."

Mixdown Magazine March 2004:

"There is not a single thing you could flaw in this recording. It really is a quietly confident and beautifully executed piece of work. Romig has managed to capture some incredible real sounds, especially in the dynamics and tones of his guitar playing.

You could file Touch under any branch of adult oriented music you like, and you still could not put a finger on what it is he does. Fans of anyone from Simply Red, Simon and Garfunkle and the modern gospel/ blues- influenced acts will find him a real treat. He is undoubtedly a gifted singer and songwriter, and I have to say, tracks like Sometimes have enough to make you close your eyes and reconsider things in your own life. Any piece of music that can do that is testimony to this man’s heart.

There are funkier, bloozier tracks that definitely have groove and a sense of fun- but Romig’s true talent shines in the slower moments where it’s just his soulful husky voice and resonant strings of his instrument. I advise those of you after the kind of music they just do not make anymore to seek him out on www.steveromig.com. You will be rewarded in the listening." -Nick Snelling, Editor
