The Shinkickers

Profile Songlist Bookings
Based in: Perth, Fremantle WA
Line up(s) available: 5 piece

The Shinkickers are a five piece outfit consisting of Paul Daly (harmonica, vocals), Gerry Quigley (guitars, mandola), Terry Pugh (keyboards), Roy Daniel (6 string bass) and Ace Follington (drums).

Roy and Ace are Dave Hole's rhythm section when he's in town and have just come back from a world tour with him.

They play a blend of rhythm and blues, world, experimental, contemporary rock with a celtic twist- what we like to call Blues fusion. The music is emotive, powerful and dynamic whilst uplifting and danceable. These guys are pure musical talent.

Review in 'The Talk' Magazine, UK

Wednesday 24th October 2007 will always be a big day for me because a rare thing happened. First of all, I bought an album (you may think this is strange, but as I work with bands all of the time through the photography and band management, I normally have dozens to listen to that are given for my enjoyment), secondly, it was from my favourite 'myspace' band, The Shinkickers.

The Shinkickers were one of the first people to 'add me' as a friend when I started myspacing, and the friendship, albeit 12,000 miles apart has developed, largely through their stunning music and pro-active and genuinely lovely manager, Jeni. My view in life is, if you give out good, then good will be given back to you. Hopefully this little review will redress the balance a tad.

Why have The Shinkickers had such an influence on me? Well if you are into Rory Gallagher, then you will understand why. The great man sadly passed away 12 years ago, but good music transends time, I'm stunned and delighted by the amount of young Rory fans who say hello through myspace - long may this continue. I had seen Rory many times in the 70's / 80's and to me, The Shinkickers take me back to when I was there. And for that I will be eternally grateful.

Gerry Quigley (The Shinkickers Guitarist) as a guitarist must be a rock/blues god in Australia. If not, may I suggest a national debate to put this right. I've not seen them live (only video), but he even looks like Rory. And his playing, wow. What a talent.

However it would be wrong to single out just Gerry as The Shinkickers is a combination of some of the most talented musicians I have had the pleasure to listen to.

Paul Daly sings from his soul (check out the lyrics for DO ANYTHING FOR YOU, when he sings the line "you turn my darkness into light", or BURY ME DEEP, "I can't swim so don't let go" and tell me he doesn't mean what he is saying. Awesome. The harp is Rory for me, but maybe it's now Rory AND Paul. You can't sound like that by immitating, it's got to come from somewhere deep inside.

The bassist 'Roy Daniel', isn't content with four strings on his bass, the tally has been increased by 50% to six which gives extra dimension to the blues and also in my mind has a jazz influence - I just love it. Ace Follington (Drums) and Terry Pugh (Organ, Keyboards) complete the lineup. I'm not ignoring the last two gentlemen, they are very good, but maybe I should get on and review the album.

The play list is:-

1. Take Your Time (great opener which hooks you straight into where these guys are coming from. Listen not only to the voice, but the bass line and sync with Terry on the keyboard - stunning)

2. Sunset (took me through many emotions but try closing your eyes and let the guitar/organ take you where it wants to go)

3. Last Night (It's about 18 minutes long, starts with what i thought were whale noises and then takes me back to 1972, Newcastle City Hall, the first time I had seen Mr Gallagher live and also the first time a harmonica had been introduced to me as a cool instrument - you judge for yourself and make up your own mind. I can only give you honest feedback from where I see it, but give yourself a treat and listen to this track when you buy the album)

4. Making Waves (great guitar with influences of Clapton and Cream)

5. Do Anything For You (Reminded a tad of 'Same Old Story' but as the lyrics say, I could 'climb a mountain and walk through fire'. Absolutley. Love the bit where Paul says 'l..k me up Gerry', how rock n roll is that..)

6. Bury Me Deep (Probably my favourite track - Dirty harp with lightening licks - stick a fork in me and tell me when I'm done)

7. Clew Bay Blues (Another Gerry Quigley classic)

8. Weeping Willow (a perfect end to what must have been a stunning gig. Atmospheric and enchanting)

In summary, I've never spent $25 AUS dollars before (not sure what the exchange rate is but what the heck), but am delighted with this Album. Most people who know me have listened to it and not one has said anything other than good things about it.

Great mix of talent, heart, soul and f...g great music.
