HWYL is John Francis.

HWYL performs original contemporary world music played on marimbas and other ethnic percussion instruments.

John has played drum kit since 1969 and played in many different bands covering jazz rock, pop, country and more recently, world music, including Face Value, Profile, The Clares, Sam I Am, Zulus on Ice, Brightwater and Country Express.

John has performed at Port Fairy Folk Festival, Maldon Folk Festival, Ranges Folk Festival and, in 2004 WOMADELAIDE with the duo Seren.

John currently has a great interest in marimbas, having gone down the path of experimentation to find just how many genres could be covered with marimbas as the core instrument. He continues to experiment on his next upcoming CD which will feature songs inspired by trance, hip-hop, rap as well as tribal and African rhythms.
