Biography
At 24 years old, Appiah has mastered the diverse cultures of West Africa and represents the beauty of Ghana with his telling dance style. He performs with highly captivating and unforgettable power, precision and energy. Being highly skilled in the dance and drumming allows him to expertly teach the understanding of the how the drumming and dance ‘talk’ with each other, a concept and understanding that is so important in African performance arts.
Appiah began dancing from an early age with his master Omari and the Miracle Dancers in his hometown, Accra. His early years of dancing focused on freestyle and Afro hip hop and at age 16 he was a regional dance champion in Ghana. He then joined Agoro, a leading performance group, and worked with them learning and understanding traditional drumming and dance.
In 2003 he created his own company, Asanti Dance Theatre. Due to his strong leadership abilities the group quickly developed and expanded into a successful 15 member drum and dance performance company, working with dancers, students and travellers from all over the world. Their slogan is POWER and PASSION, a name that is most definitely reflective of the groups dedication, energy and support of their masters vision.
Appiah recently arrived in Australia after spending 5 months in London, performing in a new West End show ‘Stormforce: African beat/ Irish Feet’, as well as teaching in schools and other performances. He is now working in Australia as co- director of ‘Botue’, a new Ghanaian drum and dance company specialising in true traditional works.
With a strong history of teaching African drum and dance, Afro Hip Hop, Freestyle, and Afro Contemporary to all ages and abilities he is now enjoying sharing his skills, culture and passion with the Australian community and is in very high demand.
