Sometimes more thought and money goes into what kids wear to a party than keeping them safe. Fortunately there’s a company that specialises in security and crowd control for underage teenage parties.

Managing Director of U-NOME Security, Naomi Oakley says, “Protecting teenagers with highly trained security staff and stringent crowd control measures is important because underage parties are a time bomb ready to explode!”

And she should know. As a former policewoman of 12 years, with a Diploma in Risk Management, she has responded to hundreds of out-of-control parties with gate crashers, under-age drinking, scuffles and noise complaints. The police force taught her to “think outside the square, make decisions on the spot, work as a team and observe situations closely for potential conflict.” Oakley says, “One of the biggest headaches is parties within the 16 - 25 year age group.”

In recent years Oakley has specialised in controlling huge crowds at music concerts, rock benefit events and a range of corporate and sporting events. Her experience, and the reporting of some serious security issues in the media, was when she decided to specialise in creating safer parties for young people.

Often parties are organised by teenagers and their friends with Mum or Dad footing the bill. However Oakley has a serious message for parents:

“Major problems can result if parents aren’t involved in the planning stages.” Oakley warns parents “to make sure you find out who is having the party, how many parents are present and what level of crowd control there is.”

U-NOME security provides a stringent checklist to assist parents and teenagers to plan parties that are fun and SAFE. “Most parents don’t realise that hosting a party in your own home means you could be liable if something goes wrong plus you’re responsible for any damage to neighbouring properties.”

Each time Oakley receives a client booking for an underage party she requests a 20 point checklist back from the parents and can’t stress enough that “parental involvement is crucial.

You only have to read the paper or watch the news to see that gate crashing at parties is common, as is underage alcohol and substance abuse. Police are understaffed and may not be able to attend to your situation immediately.”

U-NOME’s approach to security is subtle, female and tailored to suit your event. “The advantage of having a highly trained female presence is that communication and negotiation skills are the first point of call rather than resorting to a brute-force-bouncer-mentality.” U-NOME’s female staff manage each event by taking a proactive, preventative approach to avoid situations arising.

With three children of her own, she knows the objective is to make sure everyone has fun – safely!

U-NOME PARTY SAFE an Educational Tool for all....

U-nome Party Safe is an educational tool used to educate teenagers, parents and the community about the hazards that can unwittingly be created if a party, or celebration, has not had adequate planning, or if sufficient supervision is not provided by parents and/or guardians.

Party Safe is for the community at a local and national level.

Party Safe, if used at a consistent level via councils locally and then nationally, would create uniformity with these types of events. Alleviating some of the headaches that are caused by unnecessary time wasting for authorities. Currently each council area have there own set of rules for each municipality.

Some of the most common mistakes, or oversights, involved in conducting a celebration, or a party, are as follows:

  • Incorrect venue Is the venue suitable for the event being run? Can the venue facilitate the amount of people involved? Are there enough toilets for the event? Is internal and external lighting at the venue sufficient? Is the venue close to services such as taxis? Is the venue in an area where it has the potential to attract gate crashers, for example near a railway station or shopping centre? Does the area have a history of gate crashed parties?
  • Correct Crowd Control Team Allocation Does the crowd control and security company it is intended to use:
  • Have the endorsement of a recognised association?
  • Have the necessary liability insurance and WorkCover coverage?
  • Have experience in allocating the correct staff for the particular event? (All too often the adage “Pay peanuts and get monkeys” is proven to be correct). Another rule of thumb here is: The cheaper the staff, the less experienced the team.
  • Have the correct number of licensed crowd controllers been allocated for this event?

Parental Involvement and Supervision

The main organisational areas that need to be addressed when planning a social event are as follows:

  • Are the parents involved in the organisation of the event?
  • Has the crowd control and security company been notified of the venue details prior to it being booked?
  • Has the correct ratio of parents to teenager attendees for the event been established? (U-nome has a proven formula for parent to teenager ratios). This ratio is recommended particularly for high school formals, and the like.
  • Have the parents ‘capped the alcohol’? For example: No glass policy, or 4 cans per child or RSA portable bar within the venue. (It is far more preferable at young adult events [17 - 21 years] to have a bar supplied at these public halls).

Most of the problems at these types of events result from kids bringing in too much alcohol and drinking excessively (e.g. fights, vomiting, hospital). Death as a result, or consequence, of excessive alcohol consumed could lead to civil suits.
