Based in:
Melbourne VIC
Line up(s) available: 2 piece (duo)
Alegria is one of the most exciting and versatile duos on the Melbourne music scene. Both lead singer Penny and vocalist, keyboardist and saxophonist Martin are consummate musicians and performers with years of experience. They can provide anything from smooth jazz and ballads to dynamic dance sets featuring a huge range of music from the 1920’s to 50’s rock’n’roll through soul, funk, Motown, the 80’s, 90’s and the most recent pop hits.
Add to this Martin’s experience in Spain and his repertoire of Latin dance songs, sung in fluent Spanish and Portuguese and you have a fantastic array of music that will keep everyone happy. Ballroom dance aficianados will be over the moon!
Martin and Penny have also worked with kids for years and can entertain them with a mixture of songs they know and love. While not a major feature of Alegria, Martin has also done a “Live-Karaoke” show for years for kids and adults and Penny has worked as a Karaoke hostess and they can pull this rabbit out of the hat if anyone feels a song coming on! But don’t worry – Martin is highly proficient at shortening songs when the singer has imbibed just a bit too much or has over-estimated his/her musical proficiency! Let’s face it though, lots of people love to sing and Alegria always have spare microphones handy for extra singers.
Martin has also done seniors’ sing-a-longs and has a huge repertoire of songs from the 1920’s to 40’s. What better act could you find for a wedding or other function of mixed ages?
Another feature of this duo is that Martin creates most of the backings live on his keyboard which provides amazing versatility – especially if dancers are in the groove and just don’t want a song to end! Then he can switch to the saxophone to vary the sound for some Motown, blues or R&B.
For your wedding ceremony Martin can play the organ or keyboard while Penny can sing your favourite song with organ or keyboard accompaniment.
You’d be hard pushed to find a more versatile and exciting pair of entertainers on the Melbourne music scene today.
Penny Hempenstall - Vocals
Despite her young age, Penny, a singer, dancer and actor has had a huge amount of experience in the entertainment industry. She began her training at the Johnny Young Talent School and is now a teacher there. She has performed in duos, bands, vocal and dance groups in well-known venues including the Sydney Opera House, The MCG, Crown Palladium and even international stages in Europe.
She has had small acting parts in Neighbours, Blue Heelers and other well known television shows and short films and also writes her own songs and does choreography for various dance groups.
Penny is a born performer and her natural charm and exuberance comes out in her every performance.
Martin Cox - Keyboard/Vocals
From tours of the Victorian countryside as an oboist with the Victoria State Opera to performing a Live Karaoke show in a nightclub in Spain, via piano bars, restaurants, hotels and festivals, Martin Cox, has performed solo, in duos, trios, cover and original bands since the early 1980’s. His enormous experience covers styles such as pop, funk, reggae, blues, soul, jazz, folk-rock, Irish, Latin and African and he was even the instigator and composer for a semi-improvised minimalist band : Philip Glass meets Miles Davis!
He has written film scores, music for dance, theatre and TV, created and composed the songs for a kids’ pop band and teaches music in various schools around Melbourne. Suffice to say he lives and breathes music. As an experienced performer running and MC-ing his own shows for years he is not just a pretty face behind a dazzling keyboard! He’s an entertainer in every sense of the world.
