Line up(s) available: 2 piece (duo)
Alegria is one of the most exciting and versatile duos on the Melbourne music scene. Both lead singer Shireen and vocalist, keyboardist and saxophonist Martin are consummate musicians and performers with years of experience. They can provide anything from smooth jazz, show tunes and ballads to dynamic dance sets featuring a huge range of music from the 1920’s to 50’s rock’n’roll through soul, funk, Motown, the 80’s, 90’s and the most recent pop hits.
Add to this Shireen’s experience as a professional actress/singer in theatre and musicals and Martin’s experience in Spain and his repertoire of Latin dance songs, sung in fluent Spanish and Portuguese and you have a fantastic array of music that will keep everyone happy. Ballroom dance aficianados will be over the moon!
Martin and Shireen have also worked with kids for years and can entertain them with a mixture of songs they know and love. While not a major feature of Alegria, Martin has also done a “Live-Karaoke” show for years for kids and adults and he can pull this rabbit out of the hat if anyone feels a song coming on! But don’t worry – Martin is highly proficient at shortening songs when the singer has imbibed just a bit too much or has over-estimated his/her musical proficiency! Let’s face it though, lots of people love to sing and Alegria always have spare microphones handy for extra singers.
Martin has also done seniors’ sing-a-longs and has a huge repertoire of songs from the 1920’s to 40’s. What better act could you find for a wedding or other function of mixed ages?
Another feature of this duo is that Martin creates many of the backings live on his state-of-the-art keyboard which provides amazing authenticity & versatility, especially if dancers are in the groove and just don’t want a song to end or if Grandma waddles up to the dance floor just as the Nutbush is about to end! Then he can switch to the saxophone to vary the sound for some Motown, blues or R&B.
For your wedding ceremony Martin can play the organ or keyboard while Shireen can sing your favourite song or aria with organ or keyboard accompaniment.
You’d be hard pushed to find a more versatile and exciting pair of entertainers on the Melbourne music scene today.
Bios
Shireen Morris
Shireen Morris has worked extensively as a singer and actress in both Australia and the UK. Her work with professional bands has ranged from cabaret, jazz to soul and funk big bands, including work with the Grand Wazoo and cabaret act Bizarre Bazaar in Melbourne.
Shireen has starred in professional musical theatre productions such as The Secret Garden in Scotland, Aladdin in England, and Espresso Trasho in London’s West End. She has sung with pop group CR3 at Wembley Arena in London and also extensively writes and records her own original pop music.
Shireen has trained and performed in a wide variety of styles covering jazz, pop, funk, soul, opera and much more and is in the enviable position of being able to sing an exquisite opera aria or spine-tingling ballad for your wedding ceremony, cool elegant jazz for a corporate function or dinner set or light up the dance floor at any function with her powerful range of dance material from the 60’s to today.
Martin Cox
From tours of the Victorian countryside as an oboist with the Victoria State Opera to performing a Live Karaoke show in a nightclub in Spain, via piano bars, restaurants, hotels and festivals, Martin Cox, has performed solo, in duos, trios, cover and original bands since the early 1980’s. His enormous experience covers styles such as pop, funk, reggae, blues, soul, jazz, folk-rock, Irish, Latin and African and he was even the instigator and composer for a semi-improvised minimalist band : Philip Glass meets Miles Davis!
He has written film scores, music for dance, theatre and TV, created and composed the songs for a kids’ pop band and teaches music in various schools around Melbourne. Suffice to say he lives and breathes music. As an experienced performer running and MC-ing his own shows for years he is not just a pretty face behind a dazzling keyboard! He’s an entertainer in every sense of the world.
