Your stuff is really incredible’ (Tommy Emmanuel) The Gypsy Crims are a Melbourne based Duo performing Infectious Gypsy Flamenco guitar music composed by Orlando and accompanied by Michael Kontachristos. Orlando is a self taught Flamenco guitarist who was born into a family of Artists in Avalon on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, he spent most of his childhood listening watching or playing Flamenco. Nicknamed 'Vikingo De Jerez' Orlando is inspired by the Gipsy Flamenco artists of Andalucia Spain and has a sound very true to Jerez De La Frontera a small province in Andalucia Spain where Flamenco is considered to be very authentic.
Endorsed by Ostrie Music U.S.A with Daniel Mari Flamenco guitar strings and with recent guitar sponsorship Orlando now records on a 1973 Faustino Conde Hermanos Flamenco Guitar and a 1986 Mariano Senior Conde Hermanos flamenco guitar. Andalusian Guitars of Spain are the most prestigious guitar makers in Spain also confirmed by Paco De Lucia through his Endorsement of these Master Grade Guitars! Andalusian Guitars have proudly presented Orlando with a handmade Custom Flamenco Negra Guitar for exclusive performance use and promotions of Andalusian Guitars within Australia. Orlando's very first album is currently being recorded in his very own personal flamenco recording studio (Duende Studios) the album is due for release April 2010.
Proficient in All Styles of percussion and with a degree in classical percussion at the V.C.A. he is considered to be one of Australia's top percussionists amongst many, he now currently teaches at The Victorian College of the Arts in Melbourne. Staying true to the flamenco Art form for the last ten years he has performed with every Flamenco group in Melbourne & finally finding his home place as a Crim. Michael has spent more than 25 years performing amongst the finest Flamenco & World Music Artists within Australia. Michael compliments Orlando's Guitar with precision and intensity that is rarely seen amongst duo's of this Calibre worldwide whilst he disassembles the compass in a way very much like an Indian Tabla player would, India being where the roots of Gipsy Flamenco Originate in Rajasthan.
Represented by Multi Cultural Arts Victoria, The Gypsy Crims have performed as support act to Europe's largest 40 piece Gypsy Big Band (The Gypsy Queens and Kings) which featured Esma Redzepova - (Queen of the Gypsies) at the Arts Centre. At the Malt House Theatre alongside Simon Palomares in his recent theatre production (Its complicated) Recently Orlando and the Crims were invited to perform in Concert in Adelaide for the Guitar Fringe Festival 2009 whilst at Manchester Lane Orlando has performed solo as support act to Lulo Reinhardt (Gypsy Jazz Guitarist) from the famous Django Reinhardt Gypsy Family in Europe. The Gypsy Crims are available for weddings, corporate and private functions and can accomodate all needs, allowing up to an 8 piece.
