Line up(s) available: 6 piece or more Party time! When Ronnie Charles and the Retro Bandits cut loose with their repertoire of classic hits and album cuts, people just can’t resist dancing. The band features a highly-accomplished line-up of three guitarists, keyboards, a rock-solid rhythm section and five singers who deliver soaring harmonies to rekindle the magic of legendary acts including The Traveling Wilburys, Roy Orbison, Dylan, Elvis, Procul Harum, Tom Petty, Creedence Clearwater Revival and Steely Dan as well as The Band, Beatles, Eagles, Animals, Rolling Stones and more. They’ve been playing pubs, clubs, private parties and corporate functions around Melbourne since 1999, when Ron and David Herzog joined four friends who’d been playing together since 1985.
Front man Ronnie Charles was the voice of chart-topping 1960s Melbourne band The Groop. After recording hits including Woman You’re Breaking Me and Such a Lovely Way, Ron went solo in London. His achievements include singing and recording with Gerry Rafferty (of Stealer’s Wheel fame) as well as the London Symphony Orchestra. Ron is a sought-after session singer who’s involved in his own recording projects when he’s not fronting the Retro Bandits. David Herzog is on lead guitar. He first came to fame in the 70s hit band Kush. With credits that include composing theme music for ABC’s Countdown, he’s a session player whose guitar wizardry has featured in many well-known productions including the soundtrack of the Oscar-winning Jim Carey film The Truman Show, Channel 7’s Olympics themes and Channel 9’s Underbelly. Fabian Fitzgerald is on vocals, guitar, slide guitar and keyboards. He has toured with Angry Anderson, Matt Taylor and other Oz-rock luminaries of the 70s and 80s. Fabian combines the Retro Bandits with a career as an editor and music composer for film, TV and corporate clients. Fab has played for the past two decades with Jef Riner, who’s on guitar, mouth organ and vocals. Jef is a songwriter and occasional solo performer who has penned many advertising jingles. The Bandits’ drummer is Noel Hyslop (another Bandits vocalist and a founding member of The Zodiacs). He and bassist/vocalist Peter Becker have played with Fab and Jef since 1985 – and with each other since the late 70s. They’ve developed a tight understanding of each other’s styles that only long-standing musical partnerships achieve.
Ronnie and the Retro Bandits appear regularly at the Elwood and Kew R.S.L. clubs as well as Khyats Hotel in Brighton. They’ve established a sizable following and are proven crowd favourites at these venues.
