Ben Hauptmann is nationally recognized jazz guitarist finishing 2nd in the National Jazz Awards at the Wangaratta Festival of Jazz 07’. He also plays the Mandolin, Banjo and Pipa (Chinese Lute) as well as the Tiple and Charango (traditional instruments from South America). He studied music at the A.N.U. Canberra School of Music (98’-02’) from which he received a B.Mus. with 1st class honors in Jazz performance.

‘Guitarist Ben Hauptmann, 22, has taken a unique place in the history of the jazz studies course at the Canberra School of Music with the presentation of a University Medal at graduation on Friday, May 17. He was also awarded the Bernhard Neumann Memorial Prize for 2002. He is only the second jazz student to win this prize in the 17 years of the jazz studies course.’

Ben then moved to Sydney where he became involved in a number of projects including the bands Bertie Blackman, The Alcohotlicks, The Translators, King Curly, Wanderlust, Sydney All Star Big Band, John Morrison’s New Generation, Exposed Bone, Son Veneno and James Morrison’s Band. He also toured through China (Shanghai, Shenzhen), New Zealand (Auckland, Rotarua) and most recently with the Steve Hunter Trio to Indonesia (Sumatra, Java) as well as performing each year at most major Jazz festivals around Australia.

In August of 06’ Ben moved to London spending eight months playing, recording and teaching. He performed in Paris, Amsterdam, Jerez and Granada as well as traveling to New York to perform at the 06’ Bass Player Live convention with the Tal Wilkenfeld Trio.

‘Rising-star Tal Wilkenfeld brought guitarist Ben Hauptmann and drummer Chaun Horton to her packed clinic, which was best summed up by an audience member later on Talkbass: “The real stunner for the afternoon was Tal. She and her band were playing odd meters left and right, but it still grooved like no tomorrow!’

In April 08’ Ben relocated to Melbourne where he has since worked for a season with the Bell Shakespeare Company at The Malthouse Theatre, performed with the Michelle Nicole Band, Gian Slater & Gerry Hale. In Oct 08’ Ben co-released The Alcohotlicks debut album

‘You, You’ at The Basement in Sydney to much acclaim. ‘It’s hard to not like The Alcohotlicks. There’s an audaciousness in the line-up of two guitars, drums and no bass; a swagger as they maraud through country, rock, surf and funk like three Jazz Vikings, pillaging what they like..’ source John Shand Review SMH 25/10/08

In 09’ Ben has recorded with the 10 guitar project, commissioned by ABC classic FM for Jazztrack with Mal Stanley and played album launches in Darwin and Sydney as special guest for the James Ryan Trio’s ABC Jazz release ‘Bitter Sweet’.

Press:

  • ‘The wailing and growling trombone of Jeremy Borthwick also shows piston-like agility especially on the Indian and African flavoured pieces along with ferocious guitar work from Ben Hauptmann.’
source: Jan 08’ Limelight ABC By Peter Wockner
  • ‘Second place went to Ben Hauptman. Ben’s Canberra born and bred and a product of the jazz school and now resident in Sydney, along with his talented siblings, Zoe (bass) and James (drums). He played a more rock-influenced set. I loved his starter on Ellington’s Caravan. Then an original ballad in a trad vein, Unity Hall, and a highly effected Billie’s Bounce.’
  • ‘Ben Hauptmann's bold approach earning second spot. Their twin-guitar attack in the Alcohotlicks was loaded with surprise, irreverence and the depravities of hard rock.’
  • 'Perhaps the defining sound is the banjo, which brother Ben plays on most of the tracks. But Ben’s given it a strange twist, with this normally rhythmic and ostinato instrument played as solo modern jazz guitar. Weird, as it imparts a new choppy, staccato sound to a jazz guitar solo style.’
  • ‘Feral and bed (where does she get these titles?) is Woodstock riffs and degraded, AM audio, then an 11/4 riff with great solos on guitar (obviously brother Ben).’
  • ‘…(Ben) loosened up with multi-octave arpeggiated runs and long, angular, cubiform solos, mostly using a distorted, sustained jazz-rock tone and occasional strange, effected tones.’
  • ‘Ben Hauptmann played a telecaster with some great solos, developing from simple to blisteringly fast and complex.’
  • ‘In the band's early days there was more of a country influence in the mix of thrash and jazz. That strand survives via an unplugged version of the Alcohotlicks, in which Hauptmann plays banjo, mandolin and exotic South American guitars.’
  • ‘Gone with the Wind' alone is worth the price of the CD and is suitably reprised as track 9. Jonathan Zwartz's arrangement is a delight and showcases Ben Hauptmann's acoustic guitar solo.’
  • ‘It's hard to escape the name Hauptmann around the Sydney jazz scene. Sister Zoe is a bass player, Ben is a guitarist and drummer James can be heard accompanying, it seems, just about everybody.’
  • ‘Dave Panichi wrote the title track. It has an infectious driving bass line and features Ben Hauptmann with a superior guitar solo.’
